To understand depression, you need to understand the reasons for depression. Often, determining the reasons helps the person suffering from depression attain much needed clarity as to why he or she is suffering from the problem.

No one ever wishes to be depressed yet many millions of people do suffer from depression. In some cases, the depression is minor and it can pass over time. More significant levels of depression can last several weeks or more. Then, there are those long and systemic bouts of major depression which can truly confound a person's life. Regardless of the severity of the depression, it becomes very important to actually determine the reasons for depression.

Why is this so necessary? The fact is that once you understand the reasons for depression, you will be in a much better position to actually approach the treatment for the condition.

The Common Reasons for Depression

Genetics are a common cause for depression. While we do not commonly think that genetic factors are among the reasons for depression, they most assuredly are in some cases.

Abuse can be considered among the more troubling reasons for being depressed. Those who suffered severe physical, emotional, or even sexual abuse may find internalized feelings related to the abuse lead to being depressed later in life. Sadly, abuse in childhood is among the most common reasons for depression.

Conflict can also greatly contribute to depression. Conflict can exist both in the home and in the office. Actually, sources of conflict can occur in any environment. When a person has to deal with the serious stress associated with conflicts in relationships, bouts with depression can be among the more frequent results.

Drug and alcohol abuse are known to cause depression. There are various reasons why this is so and among them would be the fact that drugs and alcohol can have a serious impact on the mind and one's mental state. While these substances may be used for the purpose of artificially improving mood, the fact remains they commonly lead to crashes which contribute to the reasons for depression.

The death of a loved one can contribute to severe bouts with depression. This is understandable and those who lose a person they truly love will find themselves at a tremendous loss when their loved one is gone. In certain cases, the depression is long and systemic which leads to the inability to adjust to life without the person who passed on.

Physical illnesses can lead to becoming highly depressed. The more severe the illness is, the greater the potential for the depression to be. A great deal of severe strain can be felt by a person who is suffering from a physical illnesses. The diminishing of a person's abilities to take part in common lifestyle activities can be a common result as well.

The occurrence of unexpected events may not always be immediately thought of when discussing the reasons for depression but things that throw a proverbial wrench in a person's routine can have many negative effects. In some cases, a major life altering event could lead to a severe bout with depression.

Treating the Reasons for Depression


Major depression will not go away on its own. Those that are suffering from serious bouts of depression do need to seek an effective treatment for it. And yes, much of the treatment will center on delving into the underlying reasons for depression.
